When you are thinking about college you want to find scholarships to help you finance your way. If you have not earned a degree yet, scholarships are very possible; if you already have a degree scholarships are a bit more difficult to find. The best thing you can do for yourself is to look for scholarships yourself instead of depending solely on the financial aid office.

The College Financial Aid Office A Good Source For Scholarships?

All financial aid offices start you off by filling out the Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA). This is an application that is filled out so that they can tell whether you are qualified for financial aid under certain monetary guidelines. Many people think that they can only receive scholarships if they are poor, but this is far from the truth. The financial aid office only is the tip of the iceberg to find scholarships.

Where to Look For Scholarships

When you are looking for school scholarships the first thing to do is sit down and make a list of all your hobbies, interests and things you like to do. List characteristics of yourself and write down any clubs or organizations you belong to or where your family belongs. Once you have this list start Goggling for the keywords from our list. Type in the word scholarships; and then one of your keywords.

As an example, it is possible to get a scholarship for playing pool. It is a small scholarship but it can pay for books or other equipment needed for school. One example comes from the Billiard Education Foundation; if you Google pool scholarships you will find other pool scholarships.

Look at bulletin boards in grocery stores and other places where you go regularly. These often have information about local scholarships or specific programs that are available. If you are interested in cars there is a scholarship that comes from a car dealership. The California New Car Dealers Association is a good example.

The point is that you can probably find a slew of scholarships by spending a little time on the Internet playing with the keywords on your list.
